Language Arts

To begin the year, we are getting reacquainted with one another and the rug room. 

The students completed a Book Hunt. This "scavenger-hunt" style activity familiarized the students with the location of books within the rug room's vast collection. Additionally, they  discovered books recommended by peers and teachers, and added books to their book bag for reading in the rug room.

To support our Social Studies theme of California History, we are reading the classic Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell. The students have already begun responding to this piece of literature through writing, relating the text to self by selecting a secret name and a descriptive name for themselves, as the protagonist has in the story. Many students chose to use Spanish for their descriptive name!

Lastly this week, we started our grammatical Word Work. We are focusing on abbreviations of months and days. We are creating individual perpetual calendars using watercolor, allowing us to apply our knowledge of abbreviations in a beautiful and interactive piece.
