Math

We have been focusing on Place Value over the past two few weeks.  Students played the Place Value Game, a game which incorporates Place Value and Logic; solved Place Value mental math activities using tiles; and reviewed writing large numbers in expanded as well as in words.  

Students practiced their basic facts using wrap ups and by completing the facts quiz, multiplication for 4th and addition and subtraction for 3rd.  

For our harvest festival, this class baked the most delicious Ginger Apricot Chocolate cookies and made cranberry sauce.  During the cooking, Ryin kept saying "The cranberry sauce is tooooo sweet Kenza", but on the day of Stone Soup it was very popular.  

In terms of story telling and problem solving, I told the story of 'The Brave Little Tailor' in two parts, enjoyed by all; and we have been using our weekly circle to problem solve allocating the special position of gargoyles when lining up at the bridge.  Today, we added the role of facilitator to our circle process and Nia said she really enjoyed the responsibility.  

Fourth graders are practicing their geometry skills in 'This Is Not A Maths Book".  All are becoming more comfortable using a compass to create patterns and figures, such as the cardioid below.

This is a wonderful book which incorporates art and geometry in a more meaningful way and students can work independently at their own pace refining their skills.

Third graders continue their multiplication investigation.  They have completed the Things that Come in Groups chart and are using it to create multiplication tables and to color in 0-99 charts for each multiple. This is an activity that they can do at their own pace with support and supervision from me or one of my volunteers or Matt.
