Happy spring, everyone! We are, once again, excited to share with you a bit of what happens throughout our days in the 1/2/3 class.

All About Owls

Do you know which owl lives in a cactus and plays dead when it senses danger? Ask your student ornithologist😊

March was a month of researching, learning and sharing information about owls. Students finished their owl projects including an owl report, owl painting, owl calls, pellet dissection, crossword puzzle and a poem. Our owl journey culminated in student presentations to the class. They were owlmazing!

Creative Movement: Students participated in an owl installation using descriptive words and imaginings to inform their owl like movement. Click below to watch a short video.

St. Patty’s Day – We read Jamie O’ Rourke and The Big Potato – An Irish Folktale by Tomie de Paola. This folktale is about a lazy man who caught a leprechaun and chose a magic potato over of a pot of gold! Imagine that! He was outsmarted by a leprechaun… or was he?

And …..we learned an Irish jig😊

Toy Day– We continued our potato theme by looking at the history of potatoes from South America, to Ireland, to present day. We learned about the history of Mr. Potato head and how a child’s Idea can turn into a worldwide phenomenon. We also enjoyed the witty Potato Song by Cheryl Wheeler whose youtube video comes highly recommended!

Social Studies:

Women’s History Month – We celebrated the Power of I by learning about Important and Inspiring women in history. We focused on Harriet Tubman and Amelia Earhart and how their bravery and contributions changed the world.

We also continued to make connections to The Constitution, Human Rights and Civil Rights. We learned that white women gained the right to vote 100 years ago and that the 1920’s was a liberating time for women in fashion and expression. We enjoyed learning the basic Charleston dance step.

Science:

Students planted potatoes aka tubers in their gardens.

Insects: We learned about the amazing world of ants and ant colonies. We will continue to learn about insects and spiders until the end of the school year.

Math:

The students celebrated the 100th Day of School with a menu of activities involving 100. Here are some of the things they worked on: 100 pattern block design, 100 unifix snake, 100 collection of things, and words worth 100 cents! They also decorated our 100 Days of School poster with colorful patterns, worked on doing 100 act of kindness, and enjoyed a brownie in the shape of 100.

The students continued to practice their measurement skills as they worked with a partner estimating and measuring different parts of their body in centimeters.

In honor of spring, the students investigated the strength of 4 raw eggs in the Eggstrastrong activity. They planted spring baskets with wheat berries and measured and recorded the daily growth in centimeters. It was exciting to see the amount of growth over a 3 week span.

And just before spring break, the students investigated the egg, making predictions about the circumference and weight using metric units and guessing whether or not it would sink or float.
