Science

The first and second graders have science Tuesday - Thursday. For science class, they are separated by grade level. Some of the activities the classes do are the same, and some are different. On Fridays, both grades are together for Roxaboxen during their Outdoor Ed elective.

At the beginning of the year, students have been practicing using a variety of measuring tools that they will need to collect data in many exciting labs to come.

Recycled Paper

After Beach Cleanup Day, the class discussed the impact of trash on ocean ecosystems and the importance of recycling. Students then made recycled paper from old newspapers, and gathered flowers and leaves around campus to add to their paper project.

Measuring Length

Students practice measuring length in centimeters with a variety of tools. First they measured objects around the classroom and then campus. In the How Do I Measure Up lab, students measured themselves. They will compare these September measurements with how they have changed in June.

Second graders also drew a portrait of themselves at the beginning of the year so they can see how their appearance has changed at the end of the year.

First graders drew what they think a scientist looks like.

Teams practiced measuring ingredients in order to make play dough. The students then measured each other’s snake creations.

The second graders practiced measuring the mass of a variety of objects with a triple beam balance.

Halloween Bat STEM

Each student was challenged to design something that looked like a bat and that could fly. They could use any 10 materials from the supply table, plus tape and glue. Students first had to draw a diagram of how they would construct their bat and label each material. After bats were built, they were then tested to see how far they could fly.

Roxaboxen

Students have been enjoying creating a unique and special world in Roxaboxen. In celebration of Halloween, students gathered rocks and leaves to hand out, and then trick or treated to each other’s forts.
