Math

The first and second graders are off to a great start in math! We began the year exploring our math materials, establishing routines, and playing number and logic games. They conducted investigations with apples during the harvest festival and with pumpkins just prior to our Halloween Party.

The first grade students explored likely outcomes with the Dice Roll game and with Rock, Paper, Scissors, recording outcomes with tally marks.   They practiced writing numbers and played the game of Top It where they read and compared numbers.  The students seemed to really enjoy the Penny Grab game where they grabbed from a set of 10 pennies first with their left hand and then with their right, naturally exploring combinations of 10. They explored geoboards and base 10 blocks – tools that will be used to concretely build upon their math skills. 

The second graders worked on their fact power with games like Addition Top It, Beat the Calculator, and Balance to 12 task cards.

The first and second graders did a great job with our Pumpkin Caper investigation making predictions about the weight, circumference, number of seeds, and whether or not their pumpkin would sink or float. And then they figured the actuals.

Does the largest pumpkin have the most seeds?

Every Friday, the students have the opportunity to play a variety of math games individually or with a partner. Not only are they enhancing their number and logic sense, but they are learning how to play cooperatively while having fun!
