To start off February the students created a multimedia creation of a Fox in its Habitat. The first day on this project, the kids used liquid watercolors to create the first layer of a forest scene, or a place where foxes reside.  

On a separate piece of paper, the kids followed directions on drawing a Fox with oil pastels. The foxes were then cut out and put aside. Once the watercolor backgrounds were dry, extra details were added to the habitats with markers and crayon. It was then time to add the foxes. Instead on just pasting them flat on the watercolor, we created pop ups by folding a strip of cardstock to glue in between the Fox and habitat. This created a natural shadow and gave us a chance to discuss and view dimension and distance. These came out amazing. 

Oh the rain!! How could we not be inspired by all the rain we were graced with this past month?!  This project gave the kids a chance to design their own umbrellas and express who they would share their umbrellas with.  Once complete, they covered the umbrella and the dry space under with cardboard to then cover the whole drawing with blue splattered paint. Wet and messy in the art room, just like the mud and rain outside. Pictured below is Lyra’s creation. 

I think in California it’s “February showers brings March flowers”. 🌸🌸  All the plum/cherry blossoms are/were abloom on campus after days, weeks of rainfall, inspired  an abstract creation of a cherry blossom made with Sumi-e ink branches (blown through straws to create unpredictable branches), tempera paint for the blossoms (applies by both ends of a bamboo skewer) on top of watercolored paper. These were mounted on colored construction paper. Super sweet.
