Language Arts

The children continue to work a seasonal song, Yellow the Bracken, and a poem about  the months, to develop their reading skills. They practice tracking, noting High Frequency Words (example: the) and 1-1 correspondence of words.

We also finished writing and choreographing the poem about the seasons. They are deepening their understanding of the words by bringing them to life through movement!

Later, we cut and pasted the months into correct month order onto the perpetual calendars they are working on. This was no small feat for our first graders!

To practice noticing word order and meaning, the children were given Yellow the Bracken as a puzzle. After cutting out each puzzle piece/word, they worked to paste the word back in its correct order. By using the class poem as a "resource" and/or by singing the poem to "read" the words, the children worked to recreate the poem.  

This activity went home this week. Please encourage your child to "read" and/or "sing" the song. Pointing to each word, noting how they are separate words, is great too.

If your child's work came home in a ziplock, it still needs to be completed with you, if you're all up for it.
