We have had rain, a Harvest Festival, a Halloween party, and our Stone Soup feast. In our class, students have been preparing food once a week as hands on learning, to satisfy our hunger, and as an introduction or way to experience new foods. Some dishes include: lemon chia coconut pudding, sliced oranges with cinnamon and orange blossom water, and apple butter. As part of our social emotional curriculum we have been introduced to feeling faces and words, practiced using I-messages, and used our sharing circle as a forum for discussing an issue and making suggestions and agreements to help us to function as a group. The students are more successful in their interactions with each other and communication is more positive and clear with fewer disagreements and less conflict. All students have been introduced to task cards with the first graders solving the Add A Dot set and 2nd graders each working on a set that is appropriate for his or her learning; these include Early Tangram Geometry, Real World Problems, Balance to 12, and First Count Then Add. The Pumpkin Caper and Apple Investigations provided opportunities for making predictions, measuring, and analyzing data; as well as counting in groups of 10. Students spent several class periods practicing the games they wished to teach for Family Math afternoon and participated with pride and enthusiasm. All of the first graders have begun a number scroll and have been practicing addition and money by playing the Penny Nickel Exchange game. 2nd graders have been working with combinations to 100 and practicing money by playing the Money Exchange game. Whole group, we have been graphing using coordinates and students enjoy guessing the next direction and stating the coordinates of each point. We will be including math activities, such as the game and history of the dreidel game, that focus on the winter holidays. Rylee is now teaching with me on Wednesday and Thursday instead of Tovia and she brings a calm, firm, and loving energy to our class.
